Built in 1959 and opened to the public in 1993, Shenyang Botanical Garden occupies 246 hectares. The garden stands on rolling hills with green pines and cypresses, and luxuriant blossoms make for a rich natural display. More than 20 special gardens have been built to host different genera and ecological habitats. So far, more than 1,700 genera of flora have been displayed, including in open fields filled with woody plants from 56 families and 518 species; 75 families of herbaceous plants, with 854 species; and 78 families containing 400 species of greenhouse flowers.
Shenyang Botanical Garden is home to the largest array of botanical species in Northeast China. Major flower shows are held there annually, including a tulip show in April and May, a peony show in June, a lily show in July, a dahlia show in August, and a ground-cover chrysanthemum show in September. Every flower show attracts large crowds of visitors.
